The Sweep tool in Fusion 360 solves a problem that Extrude and Revolve simply cannot handle — creating a shape that follows a curved or complex path through space. While Extrude pushes a profile in a straight line and Revolve spins it around an axis, Sweep moves a profile along any path you define, whether that path is a straight line, a gentle curve, a sharp bend, a helix or a complex 3D spline. The result is a solid body that perfectly follows the shape of the path while maintaining the cross-sectional profile you defined. Sweep is the tool you reach for when designing pipes and tubing, cable channels, handles and grips, decorative moldings, wiring looms, structural beams that follow curved routes and any other part where the shape needs to travel along a non-trivial path. What Does the Sweep Tool Do? Sweep takes two pieces of geometry — a profile and a path — and generates a 3D solid by moving the profile along the path from one end to the other. The profile defines the cross-sectional shape of the resulting body and the path defines the route that cross section travels through space. The profile is always perpendicular to the path at every point along it, which means the resulting body smoothly follows every curve and bend in the path while maintaining a consistent cross section throughout. This is fundamentally different from Loft, which blends between different profiles — Sweep maintains one consistent profile all the way along the path unless you use the guide rail options to modify it. When to Use Sweep Sweep is the right tool when you need a shape that follows a defined route through space while maintaining a consistent cross section. The most common use cases are pipes and tubing of any cross section — round, square, oval or custom — that follow a routed path through an assembly. Cable channels and wire loom guides that need to route cables around obstacles in an enclosure are well suited to Sweep. Handles and grips that curve ergonomically through space, decorative trim and molding that follows the edge of a curved surface, structural channels and beams that follow complex routes and any extrusion profile that needs to follow a non-linear path are all natural applications of the Sweep tool. How to Open the Sweep Tool Go to Solid in the top menu and click Sweep. There is no default keyboard shortcut for Sweep in most versions of Fusion 360, but you can assign one in the keyboard shortcut settings under Preferences if you use it regularly. The Sweep dialog is straightforward with a small number of options that are easy to understand once you have done a few sweeps. Step by Step — How to Use Sweep Step 1 — Create the Path Before creating your profile, create the path that the sweep will follow. The path is the most important element of a Sweep operation and needs to be planned carefully before you start sketching. Create a new sketch on an appropriate plane and draw the path using any combination of lines, arcs, splines and other sketch curves. The path can be 2D — lying entirely on one plane — or 3D, using multiple sketch planes or a 3D sketch to create a path that travels through three-dimensional space. For a simple pipe that curves around a corner, a 2D arc on a single sketch plane is sufficient. For a complex wiring loom that routes around multiple obstacles in different directions, you may need a 3D sketch that changes plane multiple times. Finish the path sketch when it is complete. One important rule about Sweep paths: the path must be a single connected chain of curves with no gaps or branches. If your path sketch contains multiple disconnected segments, Fusion 360 will not be able to use it as a Sweep path. Make sure all curves in your path sketch connect end to end without any gaps, even if those gaps are very small. Step 2 — Create the Profile The profile is the cross-sectional shape that will be swept along the path. Create a new sketch on a plane that is perpendicular to the starting point of your path. For a path that begins traveling along the X axis, create the profile sketch on the YZ plane. For a path that begins traveling along the Z axis, create the profile on the XY plane. The most important rule for the profile is that it must be on a plane that is perpendicular to the path at the point where the path begins — if the profile plane is not perpendicular to the path at the start, Fusion 360 may produce twisted or incorrect geometry. Draw your profile shape on this plane. The profile can be any closed sketch shape — a circle for a round tube, a rectangle for a square channel, a custom polygon for a structural beam profile or any other closed sketch geometry you need. The profile does not need to be centered on the path — you can offset it to create eccentric sweeps — but for most pipe and tube applications, centering the profile on the path start point gives the most predictable results. Finish the profile sketch when complete. Step 3 — Open Sweep Go to Solid → Sweep to open t
